Namaskar!

Celebrations were many in January; New Years eve, Stephen’s birthday, Daniel’s birthday, the births of a new niece and a new nephew in NZ (congratulations Tan’s & Blakes!), our 16th wedding anniversary and the arrival of our first long-term team member Ann Weatherburn. Yay!

Ana, Anna, and Ann at the Family Centre
We are so excited that Ann Weatherburn has come to work and live with us for the next five years. Her
teaching philosophy , business plans and heart for children (and their community) resonates with ours.
She will be our head consultant for Play and Learn
and teacher training. First things first; shopping and orientation (by auto rickshaw). Fun and exhausting at the same time!  Her first challenges have been getting used to regular power cuts (we have about four daily) and we had water pump problems during her first week which made showering, washing hands/dishes/clothes, drinking, cleaning, cooking all that more complicated. However, she is as prepared as you could be, flexible, has a good sense of humor and is managing the new conditions, environment, clothing and culture incredibly well. Legend!

Play n Learn at Grace Nursery
Other excitement in January was having the Kings and Gateway team visit (also from Hamilton) for two days (during their stay at Faith Outreach). It was so cool to see familiar faces and show and
share with them our environment and life here in Orissa, India. How amazing to sit down in our home here with them and chat over coffee. They were such an encouragement.

In Feb, we were honored to be included like family in the four day celebration, which involved henna hand painting, several changes of sparkly sari’s, delicious south Indian banquets (breakfast, lunch & dinner!), colourful flowers as hair decorations for the ladies and interesting Hindu ceremonies. It was like a four day long fashion parade as ladies donned a different silk sari each day, and showed off their gold jewellery. Our
village was bustling with the 5000 extra guests that arrived to attend the wedding. Daniel even got to dance through Sambalpur with all the guys (we have to push past our cultural boundaries; sometimes it hurts a bit, he he he).

Friends Marriage
After what felt like such a long wait, our Family
Centre is now being used Mon-Fri! Sewing lessons commenced in February with five students and two employee’s. Hence, the new routine of walking to and from ‘work’, through the village mud huts and dirt streets, has begun, and it feels so good. This daily walk (with the necessity of shade from my umbrella) means that I am ‘out and about’ more, being seen, and people on the other side of the village are getting more familiar with us.

December 2011

Merry Xmas

We had the privilege of attending a fancy Indian engagement party for one of our sewing students, in early December. Ushered into a small room decorated with flowers, fruit and incredibly expensive silk sari’s, we were honored to be asked to bless the engaged couple in the cultural way; by sprinkling rice on their heads. Then we enjoyed a deli-cious, spicy Indian meal.

Play and Learn at Grace Nursery, sewing lessons and the boys school closed for a break over Christmas. To invoke a festive atmosphere in our home we hunted high and low and finally succeeded in finding some Christmas decorations. Fairy lights were hung around the lounge walls and a noisy, dancing Santa doll bellowed Christmas tunes, to our kids delight.

We drove an hour up to Faith Outreach and joined the Bridge family and their 700 home children and 40 adopted (orphan) children for Christmas Day. It was a noisy and fun Sunday service, with the reason for the season being celebrated. John and Della (Bridge) showed gifts on all the children (our’s included). Their generosity continues to bless and amaze us!

A team of four kiwi’s from Hamilton arrived just days before Christmas and stayed to work and play with us for three weeks. We returned to Faith Outreach with them; the three qualified Children’s workers spent a day running four sessions of Play & Learn with the youngest kids on campus (3-5yr olds). Our senior team member spent her time with 40 of the older school girls, sharing and encouraging them to follow their passions and enjoy their God-given talents.

The sewing machines at our Family Centre property made way for the NZ team to run the first ever Play and Learn . The village kids were so happy to explore the different play stations; art, play dough, reading books, hammer and nails, puzzles and blocks. They have now had a taste of things to come! We anticipate to run Play and Learn regularly once Ann Weatherburn comes to live and work with us for a few years (arriving 15 January 2012). She will be our head teacher/consultant for Play and Learn and the training of teachers in this child-centered learning style/philosophy.

Property update:

The bridge over the drain at the entrance of the ‘Family Centre’ was constructed this month, so now vehicles can drive onto the property. Yay!
Most of the remaining inside electrical work has been done so there are now electrical points, light fittings, switches and fan points in place. Our next plan for development at the Family Centre is to fill in/build up
and level the land at the front 2/3rd of the property. This will create a good foundation for the incredible play ground that we are so excited about building, thanks to the awesome kids at Gaties NZ who raised funds for that project! Now we need to source the materials for the play ground and some clever builders to construct it (to all handy-men/persons’; please consider this your personal an invitation!)
Once we have further funds, we can have a gate made for the entrance, which will give added security to the property. Our friends (Pst Ashok and family) who are living at the Family Centre have developed a beautiful vegetable garden that has sprung up incredibly fast and is looking lush and green.

Love to you all,
Ana, Daniel, Jehoash, Malachai & Eva

Nameskar Dosti!

We began November with a trip across the border to get the required six-monthly stamps in our passports. As Bangkok was flooded, we re-routed to Kuala Lumpur instead. We had such a relaxing and refreshing family time and returned home very excited about our work in India and the developments and possibilities that lie ahead.

Jehoash celebrated his 10th birthday two times this month; we had a pancake breakfast with maple syrup in Kuala Lumpur (we can't get maple syrup in Orissa), and then a week later he had an afternoon tea party with his local friends back home in Bhalupali. We purchased a bicycle for him and also one for Malachai. They have been asking us for bikes since we arrived in India in Feb 2010. These winter temperatures (mid twenties) are giving perfect sunny yet cool days for the boys to be out and about, biking around the neighbourhood.

The boundary wall at our new property "Family Centre" is now pretty much complete! It has been plastered and is looking sharp. Our next stage for the property is to level the ground, plant trees and have the bridge over the drain at the entrance made. Also, the electrical work inside the building needs to be done (electrical points, light fittings, switches and fans). Once the bridge is done, we can then think about having a gate made; Further security with a gate will mean that any further building equipment and materials can be stored out-side the building rather than inside, making the building available and ready for use. Thanks to a timely donation, we are able to continue moving ahead with these plans. Yay!

This month finished with the initiation of our own clothing label; "Ruby". This is designed to create employment and empowerment for local women and profits can feed back to the Family Centre operations.

In October we had the pleasure of having our very dear friend Cindy Pendergrast, from Hamilton, visit for three weeks. We loved sharing our daily life with Cindy; Indian cooking lessons and eating rice and dhal, trips to the boys school and town, meeting our friends, seeing our work, and hooning around on the scooter together.

We took Cindy to Faith Outreach (in the next town, an hour and a half drive) and spent the day with our friends there; a trip down memory lane for Cindy as she had stayed there in 2006. We also made a train trip 12hrs further south to meet our friends (Jason & Andrea Cobb) and their children’s home. It was an eventful and fun week at the Cobb residence including playing on their flying fox, a trek through the Indian jungle with crazy Jason, riding in their homemade jeep, and seeing elephants, camels and snakes, and joining in with the kids fun daily singing sessions. Cindy shared with the kids stories of her journey’s and adventures in Mozambique.  Cindy was a trooper encouraging many people at many meetings with local friends.

October finished with a 12 hour train trip up to Kolkata to see Cindy off, and then a short flight up north of India to visit our kiwi friends in ‘the big city’. We enjoyed all the mod cons of city life, including air-conditioned malls, fast food, and hot running water! Ooooh yeah, soooo good! Feeling very re-energized!

Eva celebrated her third birthday while we were away. We also visited the touristy, historic sites of Lucknow. But our biggest accomplishment; fitting 9 persons plus a driver in an auto rick-shaw! We are definitely learning the Indian ways!

Hi Friends

Highlight of the month was Mum and Dad’s visit! David and Jenny arrived into Kolkata and trained 12 hours south (with Daniel) to our home in Bhalupali, Sambalpur.

We enjoyed showing them around our town, taking them to the boys school, the markets, showing them our new property, Daniel’s College class and Play and Learn at Grace Nursery. They met many of our friends over delicious, authentic Indian meals.

We also did a few day trips; up to Jharsuguda to Faith Outreach where they did an impromptu talk and song for the 700 kids there, and on Sunday to a village where we were so kindly welcomed with traditional dance and lei’s.

As David & Jenny’s current country of residence is PNG, the village huts and scenery felt familiar to them, so they were well prepared and able to graciously adapted to the surroundings and life style of India with remarkable ease.

 August Newsletter!

Newsflash:  This month (August) we purchased a property!   This plot of land has an existing building on it containing a hall, two small rooms and a toilet.  In this building we can run vocational courses for up-skilling and also teacher training in Play and Learn.  As the premises in town where we are holding sewing classes is now up for sale, we will start by shifting our sewing machines and classes to this building.   This new property is only ten minutes walk from our home.

We are excited about the possibilities with the land and our dreams of building a child care facility feel so real.    We would love to build an amazing play ground here too!  Our boys have been helping us draw pictures of what the play ground should look like, and we have included ideas of having animals roaming around and a dirt bike track too!

However, first things first:  Our first requirement is to build up the boundary wall (currently only at knee height) for security purposes and to connect the property to electricity and water.  For this we need an estimate of NZ$8,000.

We already have plans drawn up for the proposed building project (child care facility).  For this we estimate we’ll need a further NZ$100,000.  Of course, this can be built in stages.  (Anyone thinking BHAGs?!).  If you would like to donate to the development of this property or building project please deposit to our business account:  Continuous Improvement Consultants, BNZ 02-0368-0065996-00.     (N.B This is separate from our Sponsor Acc).  ;o)

Other than purchasing a property and setting up a new business, daily life continued as normal this month with sewing lessons, ‘marketing’ (buying fruit and vegetables at the market), Jehoash and Malachai with school and sat a few exams (yes, 6yr olds have exams here!), Daniel teaching at the local BCollege during the week and speaking on Sunday mornings. Daniel and the teachers he is training at Grace Nursery (Kindy), continue to offer the kids new experiences and opportunities for learning through exploration and play.  This month some of their new experiences included making huts with chairs and blankets, swinging in the big blanket-hammock and an introduction to hammer and nails.

Malachai gone mad!  Stuffed undies, crossed red eyes and tongue out.

Jehoash (looking stoked) helping Mum do 'the marketing' on another rainy market day.  We have had soo much rain!

Nameskar!

Life in Sambalpur is just great! We are loving our new environment and routines.

Jehoash and Malachai catch the van to a local school at 6:30am, returning home at 1:30pm in time for lunch. Jehoash is doing well at school and enjoys both the aca-demic and the social aspects. Malachai has been finding the slow pace in the classroom boring and has been get-ting up to some mischief! We have been called into the Principals office once this month! He looks for fun in everything.

Eva loves riding to Grace Nursery with Daniel each morn-ing on the front of the Bullet motorbike. Daniel is consulting the teachers there in the Play and Learn philosophy and methods. He is really enjoying working with the kids and they all love him!  Trust has now developed so the kids are more relaxed when their parents drop them off. They know this is a safe, fun place for them. These children are from the community and this may be the first time many of them have seen such white faces! As far as we know, we are the only foreign family in town.

Daniel is now lecturing /consulting (through a translator) at a local B College from Tuesday to Thursday (after Play and Learn). He enjoys the thinking involved in the preparation and also the adult contact.  He continues travelling to nearby villages to consult with local leaders on Sunday mornings. It is customary to stay and enjoy the beautiful Indian lunch they have prepared in honour of the guest speaker. Daniel is now very well practiced at sitting cross-legged and eating with his right hand only.

Gole Bazaar at Shutting time on a wet day (c.f. The Mall).

I began the month doing what I do best: shopping! I bought four sewing machines (three treadles and one electric) for our sewing school which we have set up and started in our two classrooms/offices in Sambalpur. We have also borrowed two standard treadles from our friends at Grace Nursery, who also have ladies wanting to come for lessons. So we are well equipped and already in great demand! Our current students are very keen to learn and are boasting to their friends and neighbours that they are learning international sewing techniques never seen here before! This apparently makes up for the fact that our course fee is Rs300 /month (NZ$7.80) which is expensive compared to other tailoring courses available in town.  Rs300 is a significant amount to these families. For those who cannot afford to pay the fee, we arrange ‘sponsorship’ for them. Little do they know that we are paying to the business for them—which means that actually our financial supporters back home are!

So thank YOU to those who choose to partner with us by sharing financially. Together we are giving our poor friends new marketable skill to help themselves out of poverty. Without you we would have an empty room with no sewing machines, scissors or paper for patternmaking. Helping them in this way is made possible by your generosity. Thank you again.

To those who support us spiritually; thank you for all your ‘thoughts’ this past month with the sickness we’ve had in the family. We are all well and back to full health again now! Thank you!
Love to you all, Ana, Daniel, Jehoash, Malachai & Eva

OUR PINK HOME (soooo nice)!

June 2011 Newsletter

Go Matthew!

Nameskar!

In June we had the pleasure of managing the Faith Outreach Orissa campus for two weeks while the Bridge family were away. As it was the summer holidays, most of the children had returned to their families and villages for the summer break so we had just the 35 orphans in our care, plus staff.

We enjoyed getting to spend some quality time with the kids. We also learnt more of the infrastructure as I did the office work/accounting each morning before heading to Play and Learn with the youngest orphans. Daniel met daily with the staff for a brief meeting before heading out to have fun with and organize the kids for the day. We would come home at 8pm after dinner.

HIGHLIGHTS: introducing the kids to water sliding on a tarpaulin with the slippery aid of dishwashing liquid. They loved it; a great way to cool down from the 47 degree C summer heat!

They also enjoyed scavenger hunts, learning some new action songs, library time and art time. To keep them occupied in-doors during the peak heat of the day we showed them some kids movies most after-noons.

We all enjoyed the summer fruits of water melons, mango’s and kept our energy up with banana’s!

NEWSFLASH: After our fortnight of managing campus we said our farewells and shifted all our belongings and our focus an hour and a half south to the town of Sambalpur! Yes, our apartment was finally ready!
Installing Fans
We have settled quickly and are enjoying our new home. We are located on the edge of a village 5 minutes from Sambalpur, called Bhalupali (Bear place). So, we are enjoying rural views and a quiet neighbourhood. The view from our rooftop (where we hang our laundry) is spectacular. We are feeling so blessed to be here.

We had one week to unpack and set up in our pink home before Jehoash started school and Daniel and I (with Eva and Malachai on the Bullet motorbike with us) commenced our daily consultations of Play and Learn at Grace Nursery (Kindy).

Malachai’s summer holidays have finally come to an end and he has now started school. Both boys are lov-ing being in Sambalpur and loving their new school. They get picked up at 6:30am by the van. Malachai’s classes finish at 11am. Jehoash’s finish at 1pm, in time to come home for lunch.

I commenced my first sewing class which is going well. Two of the three ladies speak a little English, which is most helpful considering my Oriya vocab is very limited and the Oriya spoken here in Sambalpur is different to that in Jharsuguda!

We are loving being around language a lot more now than when we were on the English-speaking bubble at Faith Outreach. We are keen to expand our language skills and one day become fluent in Oriya (both Sam-balpuri Oriya and Oriya!) It turns out that I am picking up more Oryia than Hindi, and Daniel is picking up more Hindi than Oriya; so depending on the situation we’ve got it covered! Once again, great team work.

June concluded with Malachai’s 6th birthday, which we celebrated with a pink strawberry cake!

Love to you all, Ana, Daniel, Jehoash, Malachai & Eva

Hi Friends!

Scootering around Suzhou Parks
May is the middle of the school summer holidays here in India. We learnt from last year’s experience that if we intend to travel during the summer holidays we had better book early. This is the time of year when everyone in India travels to take refuge in the cooler areas, hence the train tickets are sold out. The heat reaches 47 degrees! Thankfully it is a dry heat. Our great escape was to China where we enjoyed two weeks staying with Kristy and Jarrod Wilkinson-Smith (who generously sponsored our trip! Too kind!) and their two awesome kids (Ruby,6, and Liam,4). It was SO wonderful to be with family again and see the kids playing with their cousins. We enjoyed perfect, pleasant weather, daily strolls (and scootering for the kids) through beautifully groomed gardens, parks, playgrounds, wide clean roads (no cows in sight), air conditioned malls, Star-bucks iced coffees, KFC, real NZ cheese, pavlova (made by legend Jarrod!), manicures, pedicures and massages (Kristy spoiling me rotten!), and even a day at the ferris wheel park! It was an incredible time of relaxation and refreshment. Everything was just so peaceful and clean!

Family Walks (2/3 ain't bad)

Even though the W-Smiths were still at work and school while we were there, we made the most of our afternoons, evenings and weekends together, and also made trips to school with them to see more of their world. Kristy is a teacher at the prestigious international school that Ruby and Liam attend and which Jarrod volunteers at. Daniel and I took turns, each spending a day at the school, to learn and absorb. I also wore my sari and did a presentation to three classes about India.

Cousins relaxing watching movies together
Our apartment (under construction) in Sambalpur is al-most ready for us. The final touches we are awaiting are the installation of the toilets, hand basins and show-ers. We anticipate shifting there after June 16th, follow-ing our fortnight overseeing Faith Outreach campus while the Bridge family are away at a wedding. We are planning to spend the two weeks running a fun children's art pro-gram with music, colour and drama.
